Baltic’s first 34mm Hermétique

Baltic released the Hermétique The Rift this week to mark its role as official timekeeper of The Rift, a gravel race across southern Iceland that follows the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It’s a full-lume Hermétique with a Super-LumiNova center section, in colors taken from the Icelandic landscape. The real news is the size: for the first time the Hermétique comes in 34mm, next to the existing 37mm. Both have 150m water resistance, a double-domed sapphire crystal and an integrated crown, so they sit comfortably on either wrist.

Mr Jones Watches dug two designs out of its archive and handed them to its print team. Chaos Window, first made in 2017, is back with metallic gilding by senior gilding technician Giulia Cacciuttolo. Reading it is the fun part. The angle of a horizon line shows the hours, with a row of ships telling you which end to read. Flames from a serpent’s nostrils show the minutes and a small square in the middle is the seconds. Mechanical, limited to 50 pieces. Moonhead, from 2014, was redone by illustrator Emma Prince, with a Ziggy Stardust inspired sun, a gilded moon for the hours and Bertrand Russell’s famous teapot for the minutes.
