The Chronoscout Digest: August 24 - 30

anOrdain launched the Model 1 Porcelain this week, and there's a real distinction hiding in that name. Most watches labelled porcelain use pre-made zirconia ceramic sheets. anOrdain actually works with clay, press-moulded and high-fired in Glasgow using traditional pottery techniques, which means every dial comes out slightly different. It also means brutal attrition: around 300 dials attempted a month, up to 90% rejected. Still faster than their enamel, which is why the enamel waiting list sits at five years and this one you can just buy. Custom numerals by typographer Kia Tasbihgou, who took inspiration from old Breguet pocket watches, echoed in thermally blued hands. 70 pieces at launch with monthly batches after.

Fears went big for their double anniversary with the Brunswick 39 Perpetual Calendar, 180 years since founding and 10 since the revival. It's the first automatic perpetual calendar from a British brand in modern times, four and a half years in development and it's not a limited edition. Dubois Dépraz module on a hand-finished Sellita SW300 with an 18ct gold rotor, all squeezed into a 39mm cushion case just 9.4mm thick.
