The Chronoscout Digest: August 10 - 16

Nivada Grenchen expanded their Autochron line this week, and the backstory is the good part. It's based on a rare 1970s Nivada chronograph prototype that never made production. What makes it special: the dial came from Singer, the same supplier behind the exotic dials on Rolex's Paul Newman Daytona. That's why the Autochron looks so familiar the first time you see it. Five variants this week, Orange in both Valjoux 7750 automatic and VK67 mecaquartz, plus mecaquartz Panda, Reverse Panda and Blue. The mecaquartz starts at $530 and gets you the vintage racing look without the mechanical upkeep.

Louis Erard also dropped the Time Eater Tourbillon in blue, another of their artist team-ups, this one with Konstantin Chaykin. If you don't know Chaykin, he's the guy behind the Joker watches where the subdials form two eyes and a mouth that tracks the moon phase. Same sense of humor here. These are the collaborations worth paying attention to, a serious independent watchmaker working at a level that reminds you what's actually possible.

Cheers,

Michel
